Abbie Schofield visits the Bingham Riverhouse in Richmond, a boutique Thameside hotel with a focus on ‘slow’ food and wellbeing

As a north Londoner, my usual staycations involve getting as far away from the city as possible in favour of countryside air or, even better, the sea.

But, short on time and energy, growing numbers of us are turning to more accessible micro-holidays instead of long weekends away: a one night stay not-too-far from home can still provide a refreshing change of scenery.

Keen to explore the micro-holiday trend, I visited the Bingham Riverhouse in Richmond.

Where is it?

On the banks of the River Thames and moments from London’s largest Royal Park, the Bingham Riverhouse marries peaceful nature with the perks of city living; you can go from deer-spotting in Richmond Park to shopping, eating and drinking on the high-street within minutes. Richmond station is a 15-minute walk away from the hotel, with easy access to central London.

What’s the accommodation like?

The luxurious Best River Rooms have beds large enough for two to starfish, sleek marble bathrooms complete with spa-like toiletries and serene views across the garden and river.

But the pièce de resistance is the hand-forged copper bath-tub in the bedroom, which I can’t resist plunging into at the end of the day.

A little more cupboard exploring reveals thoughtful details like a yoga mat, hot water bottle, complimentary CBD drops and mini bar stocked with healthy snacks. The TV is pre-loaded with all the streaming apps too – this is a hotel room where you can have a Proper Night In.

What did you eat and drink?

Food at Bingham Riverhouse is exceptional, and its riverside restaurant and terrace has views to match. The hotel recently welcomed a new chef, South African-born Vanessa Marx, who champions sustainable produce and consciously-sourced foods, and the care and quality taken in the kitchen can be tasted in each mouthful.

I check in just in time to try the Sunday roast and enjoy melt-in-the-mouth Haye Farm organic beef with horseradish jus and all the trimmings: a giant, crispy Yorkshire pudding, sweet rainbow carrots, smoky charred cabbage and, of course, crispy roast potatoes.

There's always room for dessert, and the creamy baked cheesecake with seasonal blood orange is an indulgent end to the relaxed feast.

The wine list is extensive but on this occasion, I stick to the non-alcoholic options, and the Bingham has one of the most impressive offerings I've seen. Instead of Prosecco, I begin my meal with a sparkling jasmine tea that's sweet with a floral perfumed aroma. It feels really special, and far more delicious than alcohol-free Prosecco. The Bingham’s 0% ABV cocktail list, Mindful Mixes, has everything from a lemongrass ‘martini’ to a smoky, cinnamon and agave mocktail reminiscent of a margarita.

Breakfast is a buffet of homemade jams, fresh fruit and juices, pastries and yogurts, plus cooked breakfast to order. I go for creamy scrambled eggs and sumptuous smoked salmon on sourdough toast.

What is there to do?

There are plenty of activities to enjoy without leaving the hotel grounds. Grab a kayak and take to the waters, find your yoga flow at bhuti (the intimate garden pod studio) or cosy up in the drawing room by the roaring fire.

On Richmond high street, you'll find plenty of shops - independents plus all the big names - or further afield you can visit Kew Gardens, Kew Palace and Twickenham stadium.

What do I need to pack?

Nothing fancy – while the Bingham is elegant, there’s a very cosy vibe and no pressure to dress up.

Don’t forget your comfy shoes if you want to take a stroll along the river or have a stomp around Richmond Park.

Lasting memory

The phenomenal sleep I had! The complimentary CBD drops, warming lavender-infused bath and silky bed sheets sent me into a slumber I wish I could repeat every night.
