The Sun Inn, Felmersham
by Abigail Spooner

Abigail Spooner heads to The Sun Inn, a picture-postcard pub with a farm-to-fork tasting menu and no shortage of well-trodden countryside paths on its doorstep.
Where is it?
In the pretty riverside village of Felmersham, nestled in the north Bedfordshire countryside.
What’s the accommodation like?
Two beautifully restored boutique bedrooms – named Dawn and Dusk – are tucked away on the upper floors of the pub and exude a sense of calm. Our huge split-level bedroom is set up in the eaves, with an open-plan kitchen-come-sitting room and a luxurious shower room downstairs, and up the winding staircase a dressing area with an impressive rolltop copper bath.

What did you eat and drink?
Head chef Pete Pestell runs the kitchen by a ‘farmyard to fork’ ethos. He owns the inn with childhood friend JJ Ibbett, (along with partners Connie and Laura) who looks after the pub’s own 350-acre Wildberry Farm. From the set menu, our first course is tender confit duck from Wildberry Farm with creamy butter beans and a cassoulet-style crumb. Next, leeks from the local village of Sharnbrook topped with brown shrimps, before the main event – a generous serving of succulent braised lamb sits on a bed of boulangère-style potatoes – some soft and soaking up the flavours of the rich stock, others contrastingly crisp and burnished. Dessert is a delicious twist on crêpes suzette: a folded pancake drenched in a sweet-sour plum sauce, with a good glug of amaretto.
The next morning, we enjoy the luxury of a lie-in and breakfast hand delivered to our room with a gluggle jug of fresh orange juice. We tuck into oozy poached eggs with smoked trout on sourdough toast.

What is there to do?
Felmersham Gravel Pits, a tranquil nature reserve teeming with birdlife, is just a stone’s throw away. There is no shortage of sprawling footpaths and nature hotspots nearby. Priory Country Park in Bedford is well worth a visit for a peaceful lakeside walk or a spot of dinghy sailing.
What do I need to pack?
Depending on the time of year, a pair of wellies or a picnic blanket!
Lasting memory
I’m still dreaming of those amaretto-laced plum pancakes.
