Staycation: The Mitre Hotel, Hampton Court, Surrey
The Mitre Hotel

Nadine Brown checks into this cosy hotel that comes with a touch of luxury and access to Hampton Court Palace. A must-visit for history buffs.

Where is it?

The Mitre, part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group, is set on the banks of the River Thames and is a zebra crossing away from Henry VIII’s former palatial digs, Hampton Court Palace.

What's the accomodation like?

Originally built in 1665 as a guesthouse for members of the gentry who hadn’t quite scored an overnight stay at the palace, the hotel is atmospheric with creaky halls, a cosy library and complimentary bottles of The King’s Ginger liqueur and handmade biscuits in the rooms. Of the 36 bedrooms, each has a historical name such as ‘Christopher Wren’ – the architect who worked on the palace as well as being a resident of Hampton itself.

What did you eat and drink?

With the brasserie facing the river you’d be forgiven for being distracted, but the food more than holds its own. We dined on a rich and earthy mushroom pâté, greedily heaped onto toasted sourdough with a sweet and tangy onion marmalade. Monkfish with chorizo and white bean cassoulet, and smoked haddock linguine with chilli and capers were comforting, and we had to make room for a whisky crème brulée – a delightfully boozy twist. Breakast the next morning is a small but classic affair with hot food options as well as a continental buffet.

What is there to do?

The clue is in the name – Hampton Court Palace is just across the road, plus you get free tickets if you’re a hotel guest. If history really isn’t your thing, Bushy Park, London’s second-largest royal park, is under 20 minutes' walk away. If you’d rather stay put and experience a little luxury, onsite spa the Pamper Room offers a range of treatments that will leave you feeling like a queen.

What do I need to pack?

Walking shoes and reading glasses if you plan on spending time in the hotel library, or flicking through the books in your room.

Lasting memory

Definitely the whisky crème brulées!

Sainsbury’s magazine insider tip

Get post-Hampton Court snacks from The Coppernose, an independent café owned by the hotel and just a few doors down.
